Jewelry Care
Sterling silver naturally tarnishes when exposed to air and other elements. There are other factors that can cause tarnish as well: some skin types, lotions, exposure to other tarnished jewelry, improper storage, etc. How your jewelry is stored can make a difference in how quickly your jewelry tarnishes. When not being worn, your jewelry should be stored in a closed jewelry box or a plastic bag. It should not be touching other jewelry, especially if the other jewelry is tarnished.
The best solution for tarnish is prevention. To prevent tarnish build-up, you should periodically polish your pendants with a polishing cloth. You can purchase one from our site, under "extras" or purchase from most jewelry supply stores. The blackened letters will not be affected by rubbing with the polishing cloth. Cleaning solutions are not recommended unless otherwised discussed with us or your local jeweler.
As of April 2016 most* of our sterling silver is plated with Rhodium, which prolongs the life of your piece and helps prevent tarnishing. If you have an older piece that you believe is unplated and are interested in plating please contact us to consult with our customer service team regarding our Refurbishing Service that will restore your jewelry close to its original beauty for a small fee. If you are experiencing tarnishing and you purchased it after April 2016 directly from POSH Mommy Jewelry please send us photos (front and back) of your pieces to customerservice@poshmommyjewelry.com for us to review.
POSH pieces purchased at various timeframes may slightly differ in appearance. We try our best to stay true to our beginnings but some changes will happen due to customer feedback, cost, manufacturing process & technology, inventory etc. We are always looking at improving our product to keep costs low and still deliver high quality. If you would like to inquire about matching your older piece please contact us before placing an order (additional costs may incur).
If your plating has worn away and your silver piece is starting to tarnish it could be for a variety of reasons. We do offer refurbishing services or we recommend upgrading to Karat Gold. Please note as a jewelry industry standard karat White Gold is plated with Rhodium to get that nice bright white color. This is because mined Gold is naturally yellow. Think about it have you ever heard of a gold bar in any other color other than yellow :) So White Gold's plating too will wear away eventually.
An important note about plated metals: Everyone’s skin is as unique as the customized jewelry they wear! Because of this fact, there are some physiological and lifestyle factors to consider before purchasing plated jewelry in order to make sure it’s right for you and will have a long and enduring life. Even thick plated metals such as our Vermeil, certain factors can cause even the thickest platings to wear down over time and reveal the white natural Silver underneath. For example: if your (or the gift’s recipient’s) skin is more acidic or prone to oiliness — acidic skin oils can eat away at plating; if you tend to heavily use fragrant lotion or hairspray or other cosmetic products in the area you’d wear your jewelry, you might want to consider other options. If you’re an active type and looking for jewelry you can wear round the clock, even during your workouts, you should go for our Karat Gold products — particularly if your regular activity includes swimming or running, which can add to the wearing down of your piece. We want you to love the piece you purchase so we do our best to ensure you know as much about plated jewelry as we do!
*Tiny POSH and bePOSH Stackable Rings are unplated.
